PhD in Regional Economics
PhD scholarships in Social Science / Business Administration at the Department of Border Region Studies
Applications are invited for PhD scholarships with a profile within Regional Economics and the Spatial Dimension of Economics or in business development. The positions are to be filled by the 1st of September 2012 or as soon as possible thereafter. The place of work will be the Department of Border Region Studies in Sønderborg.
The PhD scholarships are financed by a grant from the INTERREG 4A within the Project ‘Emerging Attraction’, and the successful candidates’ projects are supposed to analyse the regional economic and cross-border aspects of regional development.
One of the scholarships is aiming at policies for the improvement of the regional innovation systems, knowledge dissemination and strengthening of the regional human capital. Special focus will be on the identification and analysis of qualification gaps and knowledge transfer on the regional level.
The other scholarship should focus on regional economic analysis and structural change in an international and cross-border perspective and with a clear focus on empirical data analysis.

The successful applicants will be enrolled in the relevant PhD programme at SDU, participate in research and dissemination activities within the project and become member of a cross border group of PhD students.
As part of the PhD study, an individual education programme within the relevant discipline of the candidate has to be completed. You will be expected to complete a six-month stay at a research institution abroad and/or at a project partner, and over the period of the programme, to acquire experience of teaching or dissemination activities. You are also expected to participate in the various activities at the department and – apart from your stay abroad – to be regularly present at the department.
The scholarships are available to students who wish to enter the PhD programme in Social Science / Business Administration in the framework of the 5+3 programme. A 5+3 PhD scholarship is granted to applicants who have completed an MSc in Economics, Business Administration or other relevant M.Sc. The scholarships run for three years. Salary and conditions of employment will be in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations).

The Department of Border Region Studies is located in Sønderborg and rooted in the unique history of the Southern Danish border region. It has lively relationships with the business community and the cultural institutions of the region. The department constitutes an interdisciplinary unit with scholars being organised around three research groups focusing on business administration, regional economics, and people and society in border regions. Teaching is offered at all levels within Business administration, Business Relationship Management, European Studies and Regional Economics. Approximately 800 students from about 50 countries are enrolled at the department. Teaching is conducted in English only.

The employment as a Salaried PhD Research Fellow is governed by the agreement of October 1, 2008 on Graduate Employees in government appendix 5 – protocol on PhD Research Fellows.

The application form should be accompanied by
1. A detailed curriculum vitae
2. A translation of grades according to the European ECTS system obtained in BA and MSc programmes,
3. A project description (max 5 pages),
4. An abstract for above project description of no more than 250 words
a. The abstract must clearly state the research area, objectives and methods of the project.
b. The abstract must contain a well-motivated suggestion for a supervisor among faculty at the Department of Border Regional Studies – a list of the employees from the department can be found here
All non-Danish documents must be translated into English.
Applications will be assessed by a course committee. When the committee has submitted its report, the applicant will receive the part of the evaluation that concerns him/her. Applications that are incomplete with regard to the above requirements will not be assessed by the committee.
